Frere Cup
There was some unbelievable scoring in the Frere Cup at the weekend. First up in Div 1 Daren Carter's nett 66 pipped Charlie Manning on countback to win the division with Andrew Graham in third place on 67. Over in Div 2 things were extremely hot! Chris Ankers carded a nett 61 to romp home four clear of Milton Loane and Richard Woods to claim the Frere Cup so well done Chris.

Ladies’ Club Championship
Millie Dennis is the new Ladies Club Champion with a total score of 163 narrowly pipping Jenny Kershaw by one stroke. In the handicap section Elspeth Woolf's 145 nett total was good enough for a win on countback from Millie Dennis.

Juniors
The juniors won their Stags Trophy match by 4 1/2 - 1 1/2 over the New Forest to advance into the next round. The finals day of the Green Jackets was a little disappointing as overall we finished in fourth place but a great achievement to make the finals.

Pull or Hook/Push or Slice?
Many golfers are confused when it comes to ball flight and the type of shot they are actually hitting. The rule used to be that the club's path was responsible for where the ball started and the club face was responsible for the bend on the ball. Using today's club technology and systems such as Trackman and FlightScope the laws that used to govern ball flight and ball curve have literally reversed. This is mainly due to the fact the ball doesn't spin as much and comes off of the clubface much quicker than it used to.

Old Ball Flights

New Ball Flights
Trackman proves that the club face is 85% responsible for where the ball starts in flight, not the club's path. That is why teaching golf should see a huge shift towards understanding club face terminology as the key provider in helping golfers to understand their faults and how to fix them.

Here is a perfect example: If you watch a lot of golf on the television you will hear the word "pull" for almost every ball that goes left. In the last twenty years there have only ever been maybe 4 players who really do "come over the top" and who have been successful. That means their miss to the left would be a "pull".

However! 99.9% of the world's most successful golfers hit hooks, it just looks like a pull. If you would like to know about the ball flight laws and how they have changed, pop down to the shop and we'll be only too pleased to help but in the meantime we've attached the old and new ball flight laws for you to view. If you have any queries or if you need any information, you can also contact us by clicking here.

The negative effects of carrying, pushing or pulling a fully-laden golf bag over 18 holes have been well documented. Poor scoring (especially on the back 9) through fatigue and long term injuries are all risks that so many golfers expose themselves to, week after week. That said, do you still carry your bag or do you make use of a powered trolley?

Take a couple of minutes to give me some feedback on the subject and I’ll enter your name into a draw where you could WIN one of PowaKaddy’s newest trolleys, the aptly named “TOUCH” (Click to learn more about it.)

Have a great week and come on Justin in the Irish Open!

MISSING BEFORE YOU START
Jack Nicklaus stated that 90% of the misses his Pro-Am partners made on Putts they should sink, were made before they even read the line of the Putt. Rarely did he encounter amateurs with a Putter that had the right length and lie angle to allow their eyes to be over the ball in a comfortable putting position.

You will see lots of adverts these days talking about ‘roll’ and ‘alignment’. Aiming the putter in the correct direction and getting a great roll are both important factors BUT let’s start with a Putter that allows you to make the correct stroke.

The top Professionals spend hours practicing to overcome their own limitations and in fact can overcome many poor fitting problems through sheer effort. Most of us don’t get the chance to practice anything like as much, so let’s put you in the best chance to make a good Putting stroke. Why not call me on 01252 616655 or click to email me right now and let's set up an evaluation of your Putter and how it fits you.

ITS NOT ONLY YOUR GAME THAT SUFFERS
It goes without saying that carrying extra weight – in any form – is bad for your endurance, but now some of the European Tour’s leading sports fitness experts have added fuel to the fire, suggesting that carrying a golf bag, or even pulling a trolley, is fundamentally harmful to your body.

Josh Salzmann, the fitness coach to Ernie Els and other leading sports and entertainment clients - and the resident fitness expert at Wentworth - is dismayed when he sees thousands of golfers arrive on the first tee carrying their golf bags and believes that carrying encourages poor body alignment. “Repeatedly lifting and carrying a bag full of metal over a four hour period is madness. If I asked someone to do the equivalent with dumbbells in the gym you would think I was crazy!”

The safest, and healthiest, way to get round the course is with a powered trolley; but how many of you actually do? Take just a couple of minutes to fill in my trolley survey below and let me know.
Web Article: EASY TO SEE, EASY TO SCORE

After you’ve done so much hard work to reach the green there is nothing worse than having your putting let you down. Standing over a missed putt you should ask yourself three questions; did I have the right pace, did I read the green correctly and choose the right line, and did I make a good stroke?

If the answer to all three of these questions is ‘yes’ (but the ball still remains stubbornly above ground) then your problem is with your ALIGNMENT. You can be the best putter in the world but if you aren’t aiming where you think you’re aiming you won’t make many putts at all...

This was the inspiration behind the design of Rossa’s new “Ghost” Putter; if it’s easy to aim, it’s easy to score.
